A product that survives the factory and fails in transit is a manufacturing defect that the factory did not cause and the carrier will not pay for. For bulky, awkward outdoor equipment, packaging is not the last step of production; it is part of the product specification. The right pack protects the unit, loads the container efficiently, and reaches the customer ready to sell.

What packaging has to do

  • Protect the unit. A rooftop tent or an aluminium water tank takes point loads, edge knocks and stacking weight that a showroom never shows.
  • Survive the mode. Sea, air and land each impose different shock, compression and moisture loads.
  • Load the container. Cube utilisation decides freight cost per unit, which is a margin line, not a detail.
  • Present at destination. Retail or private label packaging must arrive intact and shelf ready.

We work with specialist wooden crate and carton suppliers and build protection around the actual product dimensions rather than a generic box.

Sample orders

For samples we build a custom wooden frame matched to the product’s size and weight distribution, so a single unit arrives undamaged even on a long international route. The frame is sized to the item, not the other way round.

Mass production

For production we choose carton or reinforced crate according to the product and the transport mode, with internal bracing at the load points. Fabric items are packed to avoid compression set; aluminium shells are packed to avoid face contact and abrasion.

Matching the pack to the transport mode

  • Sea. Long duration and high stacking demand moisture resistance and compression-rated cartons or crates, with desiccant where the route is humid.
  • Air. Weight is the constraint, so the pack is pared to protection only, with no unused volume.
  • Land. Shorter handling chains allow lighter packs, but vibration still demands internal bracing at the load points.

Container loading as a design input

Pack dimensions are planned against the container, not after it. A 20 foot container and a 40 foot high cube are laid out to maximise both protection and units per load, because the freight cost per unit is set on the factory floor. We confirm the per-container count with the buyer so the landed cost is known before production, not guessed at the port.

Container loading in practice

We plan the pack so that a 40 foot high cube holds the maximum protected count for the mix ordered. For a tent-and-awning mixed order this usually means nesting cartons and bracing the load to the container walls, which prevents the shift that causes corner damage at sea. We confirm the per-container unit count and the resulting landed cost with the buyer before production, so the freight line is known and not guessed.

The cost of poor packaging

A damaged arrival is rarely a single replacement. It is a claim, a refund, a negative review and a lost repeat customer, and the factory’s build quality is judged by the condition the buyer receives, not by the condition it left in. Treating packaging as engineering, planned against the route, is the cheapest insurance on the shipment.

What good packaging protects

Reliable packaging protects the brand as much as the product. A unit that arrives dented, wet or scuffed is a return and a review, regardless of how well it was built. Choosing a supplier who treats packaging as engineering is choosing lower risk on every shipment.

Packaging is a costing input

Because pack weight and volume feed directly into freight, the packaging decision belongs with the product costing, not with the dispatch clerk. We quote packaging options alongside the product so the brand sees landed cost, not just ex-works cost, before it commits.
